The most important factor when it comes to selecting the correct tubing for your process, is to consider the type of fluid you want to transfer and the nature of your application.
The transfer of fluid can vary from low to high risk media, which is why the product you wish to transfer largely dictates which formulation of tubing you should use. Opting to use the wrong single-use tubing, can lead to leaching of tube particulates into the material or absorption of the product into the tube wall itself. Further to this, it’s important to consider what you intend to do with the material and the conditions you’re going to subject it to in reaching your end goal. Using higher pressure perameters requires a stronger tube wall to withstand the process, whether it be braided or reinforced.
When considering the fluid, there are industry standard formulations of bioprocess tubing, that are best suited to specific fluid types; from active biologics which may be sensitive to light and require a more opaque tubing, to acids which require a type of tubing that are chemically compatible with the fluid being transferred.
The most common choice is platinum-cured silicone tubing as it offers the lowest risk of extractables and is fully autoclavable & sterilisable. It’s ultra-smooth inner bore allows for the smooth transfer of a wide variety of bioprocess fluids, whilst the flexibility of the tubing means it is best fit for most process environments and requirements, including sterile fill and transfer, drug delivery, media processing, cell harvest, blood analysis, production filtration and fermentation. With an ability to cope with high temperatures, low absorption and risk of particulates, silicone tubing can protect your fluid transfer & ensure the integrity of your process. Controlling the flow through silicone tubing can be done through use of tube clamps, or connections between tube sets can be made through a true sterile connection using CPC’s AseptiQuik Connectors.
However should your process require tube sealing or welding, of course a “meltable” formulation, such as thermoplastic elastomer (TPE tubing) would be the best fit. TPE tubing is flexible, clear, sealable and weldable, benefitting from even lower absorption and permeability than silicone tubing. It is specifically designed for single-use assemblies, process filling and sampling applications. Some specialist forms of TPE tubings are also formulated for long life pumping.

In the case of high pressure applications, a braided tubing offers a reinforced, ultra-flexible, high-purity option where thermoplastic tubing is desired but the pressure requirements exceed those that can be accommodated by a non-reinforced thermoplastic product.
